Container hydrangea cultivation is based on the ability to precisely regulate soil mix acidity, which is a critical factor for nutrient availability and inflorescence color modulation in species such as H. macrophylla. Due to the lack of soil buffering, nutrients are rapidly leached, necessitating an intensive and metered fertilization system to prevent deficiencies.

The high moisture requirement of hydrangeas, combined with the limited substrate volume, increases the risks of both desiccation and substrate souring due to water stagnation. To prevent root rot, it is necessary to use a drainage hole system and ensure the container size matches the current volume of the root system. The use of compact varieties and the mobility of containers allow for the cultivation of thermophilic species in climatic zones unsuitable for their overwintering in open ground.
