Winter protection of Hydrangea

The need for Hydrangea protection depends on which shoots bear flower buds. Large-leaf species require protection to preserve the previous year's growth, whereas panicle and smooth hydrangeas possess sufficient cold hardiness to overwinter without protection in the middle latitudes.

In Hydrangea macrophylla, flower buds are set on the previous year's shoots; therefore, preserving them is the primary task to ensure flowering. Conversely, Hydrangea paniculata and Hydrangea arborescens set buds on the current year's growth and have high frost resistance, making special crown covers unnecessary.

The protection technique for Hydrangea macrophylla involves the mandatory use of an air-dry method. Shoots are bent to the ground over spruce branches or supports, followed by the installation of a frame covered with non-woven fabric and a top waterproof layer. A crucial condition is to provide ventilation before the onset of steady frosts to prevent rotting.

Regardless of species-specific winter hardiness, young saplings of all hydrangea species up to 2–3 years old require mandatory mulching or hilling of the root system. In spring, covers should be removed in stages to adapt the plants to temperature fluctuations and protect the buds from late spring frosts.
