Highly resistant varieties, such as Canadian roses, can withstand temperatures down to –40 °C, whereas Hybrid Tea groups often require covering at –25 °C.

It is important to distinguish between frost resistance and winter hardiness: the latter is a comprehensive characteristic that includes reaction to winter thaws, damping off, and desiccation. Low winter hardiness reduces the lifespan of a bush to a few seasons, while proper cultivar selection and consideration of the site's microclimate ensure the longevity of plantings for up to 30 years.
