Powdery mildew of spinach

Spinacia oleracea L.

A rare fungal disease in spinach caused by the pathogens Leveillula taurica, Erysiphe polygoni, or Erysiphe betae. It is often mistakenly confused with downy mildew, which is of greater significance to the crop.

The causative agents of true powdery mildew in spinach are the fungi Leveillula taurica, Erysiphe polygoni, or Erysiphe betae. The disease is characterized by the appearance of a white or grayish powdery coating on the leaf blades, which eventually leads to chlorosis, inhibition of photosynthesis, and leaf desiccation.

Unlike downy mildew, for which strict race monitoring and breeding of resistant varieties are conducted, there is no data on specific pathotypes or registered resistance genes for true powdery mildew in spinach. When evaluating varieties, it is important to distinguish between these diseases, as large-scale breeding efforts are primarily directed toward downy mildew.
