Nematodes — common wheat

The main pathogens of common wheat are Anguina tritici and Heterodera avenae, which cause deformation of plant organs and the formation of galls instead of grains. Resistance of cultivars to cyst-forming nematodes is provided by Cre-series genes and QTL loci.

The wheat gall nematode Anguina tritici manifests in seedlings as curling and twisting of leaves, and in adult plants it leads to a significant reduction in ear size and the formation of hard galls instead of grains. This species can act as a vector for bacterial infections that cause 'Tundu' disease.

The cereal cyst nematode Heterodera avenae causes localized stunting of crops, reduced tillering, and characteristic 'bushy' root proliferation. The species includes various pathotype groups, which determines differential virulence in relation to wheat cultivars.

In breeding for resistance to cyst-forming nematodes, Cre-series genes (Cre1, Cre2, Cre3) and their linked loci QCcn.ha-2D and QCcn.ha-2A are used. The only characterized resistance gene against root-lesion nematodes of the genus Pratylenchus is Rlnn1.
