The epiphytic nature of the crop dictates the use of highly porous substrates, which require frequent but metered irrigation to ensure oxygen access to the root system. Drip irrigation or ebb-and-flow systems are considered optimal, as they minimize water contact with the leaf blade, preventing pathogen development and residue formation.
Irrigation is inextricably linked to fertigation, during which the pH is controlled at 5.5–6.2 and the electrical conductivity level at 1.2–1.3 mS/cm. Due to Anthurium's sensitivity to water hardness salts, it is recommended to use soft water for irrigation, and to maintain air humidity at 70–85%, utilize misting in the greenhouse aisles.
