The physiological characteristics of Kalanchoe require moderate drying of the substrate between waterings, as excess moisture quickly triggers the development of root rot. When irrigating, water should be prevented from contacting the leaf blade, which prevents tissue deformation and minimizes the risk of powdery mildew spread.
In commercial production, drip or sub-irrigation systems are preferred. An important factor is water quality control: optimal pH values should be in the 5.7–6.2 range with strict monitoring of salt levels (EC).
Regulating irrigation intensity, including temporary suspension before transport, is used as a tool to control growth and maintain the commercial appearance of the plants. Unlike moisture-loving crops, Kalanchoe does not require constant high humidity; therefore, automated irrigation should be based on substrate moisture sensors.
