Irrigation of Zantedeschia

The irrigation regime for Zantedeschia depends critically on the biological type of the plant: rhizomatous species require high humidity, whereas tuberous hybrids are extremely sensitive to waterlogging and rot.

Zantedeschia aethiopica, being a rhizomatous species, can tolerate high soil moisture, while tuberous hybrids require excellent drainage and are susceptible to decay when overwatered. To prevent the development of bacterial rots and fungal infections in commercial production, clean water is used, and irrigation is strictly limited during the dormancy period.

During active growth, irrigation must be regular and performed in the morning hours. It is crucial to avoid moisture on the leaves and the growing point to minimize the risk of disease. In container cultivation, it is necessary to prevent water stagnation in trays and monitor the electrical conductivity of the solution, keeping it below 1.5–1.8 mS/cm to avoid substrate salinization.

Irrigation intensity changes dynamically depending on the development phase: before flowering, the salt level in the solution may be increased, while during the tuberization phase, irrigation is gradually reduced. Complete cessation of irrigation is a mandatory stage in preparing tubers for the dormancy period.
