Oat shattering is a genetically determined tendency of grains to drop from spikelets upon maturity, which dictates the timing and strategy of harvesting.

For the oat crop, this trait is a critical factor, as high shattering leads to significant losses when the crop remains in the field beyond maturity. Given the uneven ripening of grains in the panicle, where the upper part matures earlier than the lower, agronomists are forced to begin harvesting before the entire panicle is fully mature to minimize grain drop.
Within the framework of variety trials conducted according to UPOV guidelines, shattering is classified as an important varietal characteristic. Its assessment is performed visually during the full ripeness phase by comparing it with reference samples. The degree of a variety's resistance to shattering is recorded by experts in points on a scale ranging from very weak to very strong, which allows breeders to select forms with high physiological grain-attachment strength in the spikelet.
