Rapeseed Shattering

Brassica napus var. napus

Rapeseed shattering refers to the resistance of siliques to dehiscence, which determines yield losses during maturation and harvesting. This trait depends on the anatomical structure of the silique tissues and genetic factors.

In the reference 91 varieties crop Rapeseed, where this is mentioned in the description.

Rapeseed shattering manifests as the premature dehiscence of siliques, leading to seed shedding and losses of up to 50% of the yield under adverse weather conditions. In breeding, resistance to this phenomenon is evaluated through anatomical indicators, such as the thickness and degree of lignification of the tissues along the silique suture line, as well as the development of connective bridges between the valves.

At the molecular-genetic level, resistance to shattering is linked to the activity of specific genes, such as BnTCP8.C09. Selecting varieties with high genetic resistance allows not only for a reduction in seed losses but also for a decrease in weed infestation from volunteer plants in subsequent crop rotations, while improving harvesting efficiency across varied timelines.
