Beta vulgaris Garden Beet Group
A group of root crop diseases caused by soil-borne actinomycetes, manifesting as surface spots, lesions, or tissue deformations. Infection is localized on the root crops and is detected during harvest, creating conditions for secondary rot during storage.
In the reference 8 varieties crop Garden beet, where this is mentioned in the description.
The primary pathogens of the disease are actinomycete bacteria, primarily Streptomyces scabies, as well as other species of the genus Streptomyces, for example, S. acidiscabies and S. turgidiscabies. In some cases, the bacterium Bacillus scabiegenum is noted to play a role in the pimply form of scab.
Clinical forms of the lesion differ in their external symptoms: common scab is characterized by the formation of corky spots and lesions, pimply scab by the formation of wart-like growths, and girdle scab by the occurrence of annular constrictions on the root crop. The above-ground part of the plants remains visually healthy; however, damaged areas of the skin facilitate the development of secondary infections during crop storage.
