Diseases
Oryza sativa L.
A fungal disease of rice caused by Pyricularia oryzae, affecting all above-ground plant organs. It is characterized by high pathogen variability and the presence of specific Pi- resistance genes in the crop genotype.
In the reference 159 varieties crop Rice, where this is mentioned in the description.
The disease is caused by the imperfect fungus Pyricularia oryzae Cavara. The pathogen population includes over 30 physiological races with a high capacity for variability, which leads to the rapid overcoming of varietal resistance. The disease manifests in leaf, nodal, and panicle forms, causing leaf necrosis, stem breakage, and panicle sterility.
In rice breeding, resistance to the pathogen is controlled by specific genes with the Pi- prefix (e.g., Pi-ta2, Pi-9, Pi-2, Pi-b, Pi-1, Pi-33, Pi-40, Pi-z(t)). The modern protection strategy is based on pyramiding several such genes into a single genotype, which allows for increased stability of resistance against local fungal populations.
