The ear is the female generative inflorescence of maize and a key element of its yield structure. Its productivity is determined by biometric parameters of the caryopsis, the number of rows, and the grain weight per organ.

When assessing potential yield, agronomists consider that the visual size of the ear does not always correlate with the final result, which largely depends on plant density and the thousand-kernel weight.
