Lodging in durum wheat is a significant agronomic and biological indicator that determines harvesting efficiency and yield preservation, which can decrease by 8–60% due to lodging. Resistance to this phenomenon is achieved through the breeding of short-stemmed forms and strengthening stem anatomy.

To assess lodging in durum wheat, a visual scale from 0 to 5 points is used, where 5 points correspond to erect crops, and 1 point to severe lodging, making mechanized harvesting impossible. Lodging during the grain-filling period leads to grain shriveling and a 20–30% reduction in thousand-kernel weight due to disrupted photosynthesis. Breeding for lodging resistance in durum wheat is based on developing short-stemmed forms and modifying the morphological features of the stem. Improving straw strength is achieved by increasing its diameter, internode wall thickness, and raising the content of lignin and silicon.
