Lodging during the grain-filling period leads to grain shriveling and a 20–30% reduction in thousand-kernel weight due to disrupted photosynthesis. Furthermore, lodged crops become susceptible to the development of septoria, powdery mildew, rust, and root rots, which significantly impairs the commercial quality of the harvest.
Breeding for lodging resistance in durum wheat is based on developing short-stemmed forms and modifying the morphological features of the stem. Improving straw strength is achieved by increasing its diameter, internode wall thickness, and raising the content of lignin and silicon.
