Leaf spots — garden strawberry

Fragaria x ananassa Duchesne ex Rozier

A group of fungal and bacterial diseases manifesting as necrotic spots on the leaf blade, petioles, and runners. Includes common leaf spot, leaf spot, and angular leaf spot caused by specific pathogens.

Common leaf spot (Marssonina leaf spot) is caused by the fungus Marssonina potentillae and manifests as the formation of purple-brown coalescing spots with characteristic shiny black acervuli on the upper side of the leaf. In the case of white leaf spot, the causal agent of which is Ramularia tulasnei, circular spots with a white center and a purple halo appear, often accompanied by the falling out of the affected tissue. Angular leaf spot is of bacterial origin and is caused by Xanthomonas fragariae.

Breeding for resistance to these pathogens is complicated by the lack of a standardized race classification and clearly defined resistance genes. Unlike other diseases, the evaluation of varieties is based primarily on the results of field screening and phenotypic observations expressed in disease severity scores.
