A complex of fungal diseases of perennial ryegrass, including blast, helminthosporiosis, and leaf spot, causing necrosis and death of the leaf blade.

The primary pathogens are fungi Pyricularia oryzae, species of the genera Drechslera and Pyrenophora, as well as Scolecotrichum graminis. Blast is characterized by the appearance of small, water-soaked, olive-green spots followed by the development of grey sporulation, while infections by Drechslera and Pyrenophora appear as oval necrotic lesions with a dark margin, leading to thinning of the stand.
Populations of Pyricularia oryzae infecting ryegrass are genetically specialized for Lolium and Festuca species. Resistance of varieties to these pathogens is quantitative and polygenic in nature with no specific genes identified; therefore, breeding and agronomy prioritize tolerance assessment under artificial inoculation conditions and the use of multi-variety grass mixtures.
