A group of fungal diseases including tan spot, septoria diseases, and helminthosporiosis, characterized by similar symptoms and damage to the foliage of durum wheat.

The complex of leaf spots in durum wheat includes tan spot caused by Pyrenophora tritici-repentis, septoria diseases (caused by Zymoseptoria tritici and Parastagonospora nodorum), and spot blotch, which is caused by Bipolaris sorokiniana. Diagnosis is complicated by the similarity of external symptoms, ranging from yellow spots with a chlorotic halo to necrosis with pycnidia in the center.

The tan spot pathogen is characterized by the presence of races classified by their ability to produce host-selective toxins Tox A, B, and C. Genetic protection of durum wheat is based primarily on polygenic resistance, as well as specific Stb-type genes that provide resistance to Septoria.

Under field conditions, symptoms of different diseases often overlap, forming a complex of leaf spots. A separate phenomenon is physiological leaf spot, a non-infectious variety reaction to the application of fungicides and abiotic stresses, which mimics infection by fungal pathogens.
