Rhizoctonia blight — Creeping bentgrass

Agrostis stolonifera L.

A fungal disease of creeping bentgrass caused by Rhizoctonia solani anastomosis group AG 2-2 (IIIB), characterized by necrotic patches with a distinctive "smoke ring."

In the reference 6 varieties crop Creeping bentgrass, where this is mentioned in the description.

The primary pathogen of the disease, known as "brown patch," is the fungus Rhizoctonia solani. The anastomosis subgroup AG 2-2 (IIIB) is the most specific to creeping bentgrass. The disease develops actively under conditions of high soil and air humidity, especially in dense stands where air circulation is restricted.

Symptoms of infection include the appearance of necrotic patches up to 60 cm in diameter, which may exhibit a "smoke ring" at the border between healthy and affected tissues during morning hours. The turf in the affected areas wilts despite irrigation, leading to the death of shoots and roots. Specific natural resistance genes in creeping bentgrass have not been significantly described, which considerably hinders breeding efforts in this direction.
