Rhizoctonia root rot of table beet

Beta vulgaris Garden Beet Group

A fungal disease of table beet caused by the soil-borne pathogen Rhizoctonia solani (primarily AG 2-2 group). It manifests as damping-off of seedlings or dry rot of root crops and petiole necrosis.

In the reference 16 varieties crop Garden beet, where this is mentioned in the description.

The causative agent of the disease is the fungus Rhizoctonia solani (teleomorph stage Thanatephorus cucumeris); Rhizoctonia violacea may also be involved in pathogenesis. The most pathogenic for the crop are anastomosis groups AG 2-2 (subgroups IIIB and IV), and less frequently AG 4 and AG 5.

At the seedling stage, the pathogen causes damping-off (black leg), characterized by thinning and blackening of the hypocotyl. In adult plants, depressed spots and cracks with dry rot develop on the root crops. Foliar infection manifests as yellowing and wilting, resulting in the formation of a brown rosette.

Specific resistance genes to this disease in table beet have not been identified. Breeding work is aimed at increasing the level of polygenic field resistance through screening of collection material and selection of promising lines.
