The causal agent of anthracnose in creeping bentgrass is the fungus Colletotrichum cereale, formerly known as Colletotrichum graminicola. The disease affects turfgrass stands under stress caused by high temperatures, nitrogen deficiency, drought, or low mowing.

The infection manifests in two forms: foliar blight, accompanied by yellowing and reddening of the leaves, and basal rot, which causes blackening and necrosis of the tillering nodes. Under conditions of high humidity, fungal fruiting bodies in the form of acervuli containing spores form on the affected tissues.

Although many genetically distinct strains have been identified within the species Colletotrichum cereale, specific resistance genes of creeping bentgrass to this pathogen have not yet been described. Breeding for resistance is based on evaluating the ability of cultivars to tolerate stress conditions.
