White Rust of Chrysanthemum

A quarantine disease of chrysanthemums caused by the highly specialized fungus Puccinia horiana. It is characterized by the appearance of specific light-green spots on leaves followed by the formation of distinctive white pustules.

The causative agent of the disease is the microcyclic fungus Puccinia horiana Henn., which parasitizes exclusively on plants of the genus Chrysanthemum and some closely related genera, without requiring an intermediate host. Primary symptoms appear as pale yellow spots on young leaves, which subsequently become depressed and take on a light-brown hue.

Convex, waxy telia, changing color from pink to white, form on the underside of the leaves. Severe infection causes premature tissue necrosis and leaf curling, giving the plant a scorched appearance. In immune cultivars, brown spots may form at the site of pathogen penetration.

Chrysanthemum resistance to this infection is predominantly monogenic and controlled by specific R-genes. In breeding programs, the PDI disease index and molecular markers, including the CmWRKY15-1 and CmCC-NB-ARC genes associated with plant defense mechanisms, are used to evaluate cultivar susceptibility.
