Rust of Orchardgrass

Dactylis glomerata L.

A fungal disease of orchardgrass caused primarily by Puccinia graminis subsp. graminicola and Puccinia striiformis f.sp. dactylidis, leading to a reduction in tillering and crop biomass.

The main pathogens causing rust in orchardgrass are fungi of the genus Puccinia, in particular stem rust Puccinia graminis subsp. graminicola and stripe rust Puccinia striiformis f.sp. dactylidis. The disease manifests as the formation of light yellow or yellow-brown pustules on leaves, stems, and inflorescences, which are often surrounded by chlorotic spots.

The development of the pathogen provokes intense yellowing and death of the leaf apparatus. The result of the infection is a pronounced decrease in tillering and a reduction in the total volume of green mass of the plant, which negatively affects the yield and forage quality of orchardgrass. Currently, specific resistance genes to this disease in this crop have not been described, and breeding is based on the results of field evaluation of the susceptibility of accessions.
