Dry matter — Cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata)

Dactylis glomerata L.

The dry matter (DM) content is used to assess the forage productivity and nutritional value of cocksfoot, with DM yields in intensive cultivation reaching 8–25 t/ha.

The dry matter content in the green mass of cocksfoot typically ranges from 20 to 28%. Dry matter yield serves as a key selection trait, which can reach 20–25 t/ha under intensive management and nitrogen fertilization.

All forage quality parameters, including crude protein content and metabolizable energy, are calculated based on one kilogram of dry matter. The metabolizable energy of high-quality forage from this crop should exceed 10 MJ per 1 kg of DM.

During the ontogeny of cocksfoot, the proportion of dry matter in the stems increases; however, if harvesting is delayed, this leads to fiber lignification, reduced palatability, and lower overall nutritional value of the yield. The DM indicator is also a determining factor in selecting preservation technology to ensure proper fermentation.
