Dactylis glomerata L.
Lodging in orchard grass is considered a critical agronomic trait affecting forage quality and harvesting efficiency. Resistance to it is determined by stem morphology and plant height, and also depends on the intensity of nitrogen fertilization.

The risk of lodging in orchard grass increases with intensive mineral nutrition, which provokes rapid biomass growth and internode elongation. Plant resistance is closely linked to morpho-anatomical parameters, particularly stem diameter and the structure of basal internodes, with excessively tall forms demonstrating a higher tendency to lodge. The use of the crop in grass mixtures, for example with legumes, allows for a reduction in lodging due to the supporting effect of other components.
In breeding practice, scoring scales are used to evaluate the trait, typically ranging from 1 to 5 or 9 points. Minimum scores are assigned to varieties with a high degree of lodging, while maximum scores are assigned to the most resistant forms. Evaluation is conducted visually during the period from heading to flowering, when generative shoots reach peak mass and the risk of loss of vertical stand position becomes maximal.
