A group of fungal diseases of wheat caused by specialized species of the pathogen Puccinia, characterized by the formation of specific pustules and high genetic variability of virulence.

The disease is represented by three main species: leaf rust (causal agent Puccinia triticina), yellow rust (Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici), and stem rust (Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici). Symptoms include the formation of brown pustules on leaves, lemon-yellow stripes on plant organs, or elongated dark brown pustules on stems.
Pathogens exhibit high variability with the identification of numerous races and pathotypes, among which the Ug99 race of stem rust is the most dangerous. For breeding resistant varieties, specific Lr, Sr, and Yr genes are used, which are responsible for seedling or adult plant resistance, the identification of which is carried out using molecular methods.
