The disease is caused by the fungus Septoria petroselini, which primarily affects this crop. Symptoms begin with the appearance of sunken, yellow-green or light brown irregularly shaped spots, often surrounded by a reddish-brown margin. As the disease progresses, the spots coalesce, causing extensive scorching of the leaf blade.

An important diagnostic feature is the formation of small black dots—the fungal pycnidia—in the center of the spots on both sides of the leaf. Lesions are localized on both the leaves and the petioles of the plant.
