The causal agent of Septoria leaf spot, also known as white spot disease, is the fungus Septoria ribis (Lib.) Desm., whose ascomycete stage is classified as Mycosphaerella ribis (Sacc.) Lindau. The infection primarily affects the foliage, although in cases of widespread development, the pathogen spreads to shoots and fruits.

Initial symptoms on leaves appear as small spots 2–3 mm in diameter, which, as they develop, acquire a whitish center with a dark brown border and form black dots, known as pycnidia. Severe infection leads to the coalescence of spots, premature wilting, and leaf drop. On shoots and berries, the disease manifests as the formation of light-colored spots, which negatively impacts crop quality.
