Grey mold — small-seeded faba bean

Vicia faba L. var. minuta (hort. ex Alef.) Mansf.

A fungal disease of small-seeded faba beans caused by Botrytis cinerea. It manifests as the formation of moist brown spots with a grey mold on all plant organs.

The causative agent of grey mold is the fungus Botrytis cinerea, although the pathogen Botrytis fabae, which causes chocolate spot, is also frequently found on this crop. Symptoms of infection include the appearance of brown moist spots on stems, leaves, flowers, and pods, which become covered with a fluffy coating under high humidity.

Development of the pathogen leads to tissue softening, and in cases of stem girdling, to the wilting of the plant parts above the lesion. Black sclerotia of the fungus form within the infected tissues. Resistance to the disease is associated with biochemical factors, in particular the synthesis of phytoalexins, such as wyerone acid.
