Variety traits
Prunus armeniaca L.
Apricot vigor is a key varietal trait, assessed by the length of annual shoot growth and the degree of branching, which directly determines the crown formation strategy and the choice of orchard planting density.
In the reference 176 varieties crop Apricot, where this is mentioned in the description.
To assess apricot vigor, a scoring scale is used in comparison with control varieties on identical rootstocks, as well as morphometric measurements of the length of extension shoots and lateral branches. Vigorous growth is characterized by rapid development of skeletal wood, whereas varieties with moderate growth have a more pronounced ability to form fruiting wood.
Excessive vigor leads to rapid bareness of skeletal branches and shifting of the fruiting zone to the periphery of the crown, which requires corrective pruning. Regulation of this trait is critical for maintaining the longevity of short fruiting structures, such as spurs and bouquet branches, where the main apricot crop is concentrated.
