Cultivation
Muscari
The suitability of Muscari for cutting is determined by the stage of inflorescence opening and post-harvest specifics related to the continued growth of the flower stalk in water. The crop is used primarily for miniature arrangements due to the short stem length.
In the reference 18 varieties crop Grape hyacinth, where this is mentioned in the description.
To achieve optimal vase life, ranging from 3 to 7 days, harvesting should be performed at the stage when one-third of the bell-shaped flowers in the inflorescence have opened. A characteristic feature is the ability of the flower stalk to continue growing after cutting, which must be taken into account in floral design.
Commercial production of Muscari, primarily involving Muscari armeniacum and Muscari latifolium, is based on forcing technology requiring a mandatory bulb cooling period of 15–16 weeks. Failure to maintain the temperature regime leads to physiological defects such as flower desiccation and the appearance of white tips.
Due to tissue fragility, harvesting should preferably be done manually. Given the limited stem length (15–30 cm), Muscari is a niche crop used as an addition to spring compositions or in small-scale flower farming.
