Spinach Sowing Date

Spinacia oleracea L.

Selecting the sowing date for spinach is determined by its response to day length and temperature. Optimal periods help avoid premature bolting and ensure the development of a high-quality leaf rosette.

In the reference 13 varieties crop Spinach, where this is mentioned in the description.

Spinach (Spinacia oleracea) is a long-day plant; therefore, with a photoperiod exceeding 13–14 hours and rising temperatures, it rapidly transitions to the generative development phase. Sowing during summer months with long daylight hours leads to a degradation of produce quality: the leaves become coarse, develop a bitter taste, and plants bolt prematurely, bypassing the stage of forming a marketable rosette.

The sowing strategy is based on utilizing periods of cool weather and short days. Early spring sowing should be conducted as early as possible to complete rosette formation before the summer solstice. Autumn sowing allows for harvesting at the end of the season, while late-autumn (pre-winter) sowing in October–November ensures the seeds undergo natural stratification, which guarantees uniform early emergence the following spring.
