Variety traits
Trifolium pratense L.
The mass of dried red clover plant material per unit area, serving as a key indicator of productivity, nutritional value, and forage quality.
In the reference 45 varieties crop Red clover, where this is mentioned in the description.
Dry matter yield of red clover is measured in t/ha or dt/ha. The values depend on soil fertility and cultivar type: under natural fertility, the yield is 2–3 t/ha, whereas with optimal fertilization, advanced cultivars are capable of producing from 4.5 to 12 t/ha per growing season.
Dry matter content is the basis for calculating clover nutritional value, including protein and energy levels. Due to the high buffering capacity of freshly mown forage, wilting the grass to a dry matter concentration of 25–35% is required for high-quality ensiling.
The ability of a cultivar to consistently accumulate dry matter over several years of use serves as an indicator of sward longevity and winter hardiness. At the same time, the application of phosphorus-potassium fertilizers directly influences the dynamics of biomass accumulation and the subsequent chemical composition of the dry matter.
