Aphid infestation of faba beans is characterized by leaf curling and the stunting of terminal shoots. The pest's feeding on phloem sap leads to significant physiological disruptions, including reduced levels of chlorophyll, protein, and phosphorus, as well as an increase in the concentration of cyanogenic glycosides in plant tissues.
In addition to direct damage, aphids act as vectors for dangerous viral diseases, including the necrotic yellows virus and the bean yellow mosaic virus. Furthermore, the honeydew excreted by the pest provides a substrate for the development of sooty molds, which impede the normal process of photosynthesis.
Breeding faba beans for aphid resistance is based on quantitative traits such as antibiosis and antixenosis, as specific resistance genes to this pest have not yet been identified. The level of infestation in varieties is assessed by the density of pest colonization on the plants or by visual damage scoring.
