Pests
Fragaria x ananassa Duchesne ex Rozier
The main pest is the Western flower thrips. Infestation leads to berry deformation, browning, and loss of commercial quality due to sap extraction from flower and fruit tissues.
In the reference 9 varieties crop Garden strawberry, where this is mentioned in the description.
The primary threat to the crop is the Western flower thrips, although the tobacco thrips and other species of flower thrips can also cause damage. The pest’s harmfulness is manifested in damage to reproductive organs: the stigmas of the pistils turn brown and wither, and at high pest populations, necrosis of the calyx and a reduction in the size of the receptacle are observed.
Damage to the berries is characterized by the appearance of a bronze tint, reticulate browning, and a characteristic deformation known as the "cat-face" symptom. The fruits become hard, ripen unevenly, and remain small. Characteristic silvery streaks and spots form on the leaves at the sites of thrips punctures and feeding.
