Zea mays L.
Maize herbicide resistance is defined as the genetic tolerance of a hybrid or the presence of transgenic traits that allow the plant to maintain productivity during chemical treatment.
In the reference 148 varieties crop Maize, where this is mentioned in the description.
To evaluate maize resistance, visual phytotoxicity scales are used, recording chlorosis, necrosis, and growth inhibition in percentages or on a scale from 1 to 9. Additionally, morphometric measurements of plant height, leaf area, and ear parameters are conducted, while PCR diagnostics for the presence of glyphosate or glufosinate resistance genes are used in the analysis of transgenic lines.
High resistance is characterized by the absence of signs of suppression even at elevated dosage rates, whereas sensitive genotypes show a significant decrease in productivity. The critical period is the stage up to 5 leaves, where tolerance allows for effective weed control in crops, preventing yield losses of up to 70%.
The response of a specific hybrid to a herbicide may change under the influence of the environment: under drought conditions, even tolerant forms may show signs of phytotoxicity due to the combination of chemical and abiotic stresses. Agronomic assessment of resistance is always individual to the genotype and depends on the soil and climatic conditions of cultivation.
