Vegetation period of pepper

Capsicum annuum L.

The vegetation period of pepper is calculated from the appearance of full seedlings until the fruits reach technical or biological maturity. Varieties are classified by maturity timing into early-maturing, mid-maturing, and late-maturing.

For pepper, the vegetation period is measured by the number of days from the appearance of full seedlings to the fruit maturity phase. A distinction is made between technical maturity, when fruits reach their varietal size and shape, and biological maturity, characterized by the acquisition of typical color and the formation of seeds. The period between these stages usually ranges from 15 to 40 days.

Depending on the duration of the vegetation period, three groups of varieties are distinguished. Early-maturing varieties ripen in 80–110 days, mid-maturing varieties in 110–130 days, and late-maturing varieties require 130–140 days or more. This indicator is not strictly fixed and can vary under the influence of light, temperature, humidity, and seedling quality; therefore, when planning agricultural practices, ranges of days are taken into account rather than exact dates.
