Verticillium Wilt of Strawberry

Fragaria L.

A soil-borne disease of garden strawberry caused by the fungi Verticillium dahliae and V. albo-atrum. The pathogen infects the vascular system, causing wilting, tissue necrosis, and reduced crop quality.

In the reference 28 varieties crop Strawberry, where this is mentioned in the description.

The disease agents persist in the soil as microsclerotia or resting mycelium, which makes crop rotation relatively ineffective. Infection impairs the transport of water and nutrients, manifesting as wilting of older leaves, their curling, and interveinal necrosis. Characteristic symptoms of the infection include stunting, browning of the vascular system, root death, and a reddish discoloration of the petioles.

Resistance of strawberries to the pathogen is complex and polygenic in nature, without well-defined major genes. In breeding practice, genomic selection methods and the accumulation of quantitative trait loci (QTLs) are used to evaluate resistance. In field plots, pathogen genotypes with varying degrees of aggressiveness coexist, including forms capable of overcoming the tolerance of previously resistant cultivars.
