Soybean Mosaic Virus

Glycine max (L.) Merr.

The primary pathogen of soybean mosaic is the Soybean mosaic virus (SMV), which causes systemic leaf deformation, growth stunting, and specific seed mottling. Resistance to the pathogen is controlled by genes of the Rsv group.

In the reference 18 varieties crop Soybean, where this is mentioned in the description.

Soybean mosaic virus belongs to the genus Potyvirus and exhibits high genetic variability, being subdivided into seven major strains (G1–G7) and nine clades. Symptoms of infection include systemic mosaic, crinkling and curling of leaves, as well as the formation of characteristic dark green blisters between the veins. Infection leads to overall plant dwarfing and a reduction in pod number.

A diagnostic feature of infection is necrotic pigmentation in the seed hilum area, although this symptom is not always an absolute indicator of the infection. In soybean breeding, dominant and recessive resistance genes, such as Rsv1, Rsv2, and rsv1-t, are used to combat the virus. Protection efficacy is enhanced by combining these genes with resistance factors against insect vectors, such as the Rag2 gene.
