Spinach Mosaic Viruses

A group of viral diseases in spinach, primarily caused by Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV), Beet mosaic virus, and curly top viruses, leading to systemic deformities and plant tissue necrosis.

The primary pathogen of spinach mosaic is Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV), which causes chlorosis of young leaves, crinkling, puckering, and curling of the margins. In severe cases, crown necrosis and significant growth stunting are observed. Viruses of the curly top group (Curtovirus) provoke the formation of stiff, severely curled, and deformed leaves in the center of the rosette.

Genetic resistance to CMV in spinach breeding is associated with the dominant allele SRCm1; however, the implementation of genetic markers is limited, and selection is more frequently conducted via field phenotyping. Standard classification systems for viral races in spinach do not exist; researchers use the concept of isolates, which are differentiated by geographical origin or viral subgroups.
