Germination — Red Fescue

The germination of red fescue seeds is determined at a temperature of 20–30 °C on paper, taking into account the germination energy on the 7th day and the final result on the 14th day. To overcome seed dormancy, specific methods are used: pre-chilling, treatment with potassium nitrate, and alternating temperatures of 10–30 °C for 30 days.

High-quality red fescue seeds reach a germination rate of 93–95% with a germination energy of 74–80%, while field emergence varies from 69 to 90%. The minimum standard thresholds for sowing purposes are set at 50–65%, depending on the category of the seed material.

Germination is a determining factor in calculating the seeding rate required to form a high-quality turf. Considering the slow development of the crop in the year of sowing, obtaining uniform emergence is critically important to prevent crop thinning and reduce weed infestation of the area.
