More compact forms can grow as low as 8 cm, while certain subspecies are capable of reaching 2 m. Shrub height is measured from the soil surface to the tips of the flower spikes during the peak flowering phase.

Excessive growth of Spanish lavender exceeding 75–90 cm leads to the thinning and lignification of the lower stems, which reduces the structural integrity of the shrub.
