Cultivation

Kohlrabi in Protected Ground

Brassica oleracea L. (Kohlrabi Group)

Growing kohlrabi in protected ground is aimed at achieving extra-early yields and continuous production. The success of the crop depends on strict temperature control to prevent bolting and maintaining humidity to avoid lignification of the stem tuber.

In the reference 27 varieties crop Kohlrabi, where this is mentioned in the description.

When cultivating in greenhouses, a differentiated temperature regime is applied: 25–30°C at the beginning of the growing season, 15–20°C in March, and 10–15°C in April. Prolonged exposure to temperatures of 5–8°C is unacceptable, as it stimulates premature bolting. The standard planting scheme is 25x20 cm or 30x25 cm, and it is important to maintain stable substrate moisture, as drying out causes the stem tuber tissues to become coarse.

A key difference in agrotechnology is the prohibition of hilling, which triggers stem tuber cracking and pest development. Harvesting is carried out when a diameter of 6–12 cm is reached; delaying harvest leads to a loss of tenderness and the development of bitterness. Under conditions of insufficient lighting, plants are prone to stretching; therefore, when choosing a growing site, priority is given to greenhouses with high light transmittance.
