The symptom is assessed on a scale from 1 to 5, which considers the localization and shape of the damage, as well as the percentage of affected stem tubers in the total sample. More than 80% of cracks are localized in the apical (upper) part of the stem tuber, less frequently affecting the equatorial region or leaf attachment sites.
Splitting has a genetic predisposition, with varietal resistance ranging from 0% to 77% of affected specimens. Microscopically, the process is characterized by pronounced cell wall breakdown, which is associated with a limited volume of intercellular space in the stem tuber tissues, accounting for less than 5%.
