Kohlrabi Stem Splitting

Brassica oleracea L. (Kohlrabi Group)

A physiological disorder in kohlrabi manifested by the breakdown of cell walls in the swollen stem due to uneven moisture uptake. It leads to loss of marketability and reduced storage life of the produce.

The symptom is assessed on a scale from 1 to 5, which considers the localization and shape of the damage, as well as the percentage of affected stem tubers in the total sample. More than 80% of cracks are localized in the apical (upper) part of the stem tuber, less frequently affecting the equatorial region or leaf attachment sites.

Splitting has a genetic predisposition, with varietal resistance ranging from 0% to 77% of affected specimens. Microscopically, the process is characterized by pronounced cell wall breakdown, which is associated with a limited volume of intercellular space in the stem tuber tissues, accounting for less than 5%.
