Rubus idaeus L. x Rubus subg. Eubatus Focke
Winter protection is a mandatory practice for raspberry-blackberry hybrids in central Russia, providing protection for canes against freezing at temperatures below –30...–32°C and winter desiccation.
In the reference 11 varieties crop Rubus idaeus L. x Rubus subg. Eubatus Focke, where this is mentioned in the description.
Raspberry-blackberry hybrids differ from most raspberry cultivars in their lower frost resistance, which causes upright forms to be susceptible to freezing injury, and trailing forms to die back to the snow line. Preparation for winter begins with removing canes from the trellis and securing them along the soil surface.
The choice of protection method depends on regional climatic conditions: in winters with little snow, organic materials such as peat, straw, or sawdust are used, whereas in regions with stable snow cover, snow serves as sufficient insulation. Non-woven covering materials are also used for additional protection of replacement cane productivity.
