Raspberry-blackberry hybrids differ from most raspberry cultivars in their lower frost resistance, which causes upright forms to be susceptible to freezing injury, and trailing forms to die back to the snow line. Preparation for winter begins with removing canes from the trellis and securing them along the soil surface.

The choice of protection method depends on regional climatic conditions: in winters with little snow, organic materials such as peat, straw, or sawdust are used, whereas in regions with stable snow cover, snow serves as sufficient insulation. Non-woven covering materials are also used for additional protection of replacement cane productivity.
