Winter Hardiness of Buddleja

The winter hardiness of Buddleja is determined by the root system's ability to regenerate shoots after the dieback of the above-ground part. In the climatic conditions of zones 5–6, the plant is cultivated as a herbaceous perennial that recovers annually from the root collar.

For Buddleja, winter hardiness is characterized not by the preservation of the shrub's habit, but by the vigor of spring shoot formation from dormant buds at the root collar. In regions with harsh winters, the above-ground part of the plant often dies back completely, which requires radical pruning to 6–12 cm in late winter or early spring to stimulate the growth of current-season shoots.

The survival of the crop depends directly on agrotechnical conditions. Stagnant moisture during the winter period critically reduces winter hardiness by damaging the root system. Planting time also has a significant impact on overwintering: insufficient root system development by the start of the first winter significantly increases the risk of plant death, which necessitates the use of mulching and protective coverings.
