Variety description

10 August 2026

The name "Chioggia" encompasses a group of traditional autochthonous white onion varieties grown in the Veneto region. Within this group, there are early forms harvested in May and late forms (agostana) that mature by August.

The bulbs have a "spinning top" (trottola) shape and shiny white scales. The onion flesh is white, characterized by a sweet taste and a specific aroma that becomes milder during heat treatment. Late varieties are characterized by good keeping quality.

The varieties are adapted to the climatic conditions of the Chioggia region. The onion is used in cooking for salads, boiling, baking, and sauces, and is also a traditional ingredient in Venetian cuisine.
