The variety is a local Italian landrace originating from the provinces of Livorno, Lucca, Pisa, Massa-Carrara, and Pistoia. In documentation, the variety is also mentioned under the synonyms Rossa di Lucca and Toscana rossa a fiasco.
The plant belongs to the species Allium cepa L. var. cepa. The variety is intended for local biodiversity conservation and is not an industrial hybrid with regulated agronomic indicators.
