The fruits originate from local ecotypes of Castanea sativa that have developed on the volcanic soils of the Cimini Mountains. They have an ellipsoidal or spherical shape with a pointed apex and a flat, quadrangular hilum. The pericarp is thin, brown-red in color, and separates easily from the white, crunchy flesh.

The fruit caliber varies from 50 to 120 nuts per 1 kg. The harvest takes place from September 20 to November 10. The plants are susceptible to the oriental chestnut gall wasp, against which biological control methods using Torymus sinensis are applied.

These chestnuts are used in cooking in their fresh form, as well as for the production of flour, soups, jams, and confectionery.
